Where I’ve been lately. And before.
This is an ongoing log of my travels. Some have blog entries, others photo albums. All in all, I have a fairly interesting life.
2012
So what’s coming up this year?
- The only thing that’s set in stone is another visit to Tankwa National Park in September, which Adeline and I intend turning into a DIY spa retreat. The cottage, well, house, we’re staying in at Elandsberg certainly lends itself to something like that. We enjoyed the first visit so much, we decided to go again this year. Since we’ll be going during West Coast flower season I’m looking forward to great photography, and I may just turn the trip into another book.
- Canon’s releasing a new camera, the mythical 1DX around March, and Apple will probably launch a new iPad around the same time. I’ll probably be traveling to New York for a few days to pick myself up one of each, as well as sundry accessories. Looking forward to this one!
- A few other junkets are in the works, but watch this space for details…
2011
- I took a snow pilgrimage early in 2011. You can retrace my step here:
- March 2011 – Birding weekend – Memel. This is becoming an annual institution. We stay at the Mahem Guest House and drive around the pretty countryside behaving like classic twitchers.
- April 2011 – Kamberg in the Drakensberg. Also a firm favourite getaway place.
- May 2011 – attended the Bushfire Festival in Swaziland – three days of arts and music, as the saying goes. Went with Mark Straw of the Johannesburg Photowalkers, who kindly organised VIP tickets. The music was great, it’s just, you know, at my age one crashed a bit earlier than thirty years ago, so we left in the evening when things just started cooking. Either way we had a great time, and I got to snap a few of the music acts.
- July 2011 – Long weekend in Kaapschehoop – misty morning, fireside, good friends. Magical. Oh yes. It was for my half-century celebration.
- August-September 2011 – Six weeks working at the Rugby World Cup in Wellington, New Zealand. Really got stuck into Wellington’s plethora of bookshops. Plus a bonus visit to Rotorua!
- November 2011 – Paris in autumn! Fantastic week in the city of love, staying at an apartment on Rue Isle St Louis. And of course, Paris is photo heaven, so I was quite productive with the camera.
- December 2011 - Two weeks traveling around the stretched out vistas of the Karoo and Namaqualand, with the highlight being three days at the Tankwa National Park. Totally off the beaten track, totally relaxing!
